Maldives or Bali for a Honeymoon: Which Should You Choose?

By Curate Your Vacation · 7 min read · Updated October 2026

Maldives or Bali is the first question most Indian couples ask when they start planning a honeymoon abroad. Both are close to India and both are easy on an Indian passport. They are also two completely different holidays. This page compares them on the things that actually decide the trip: what you do all day, what it costs, when to go, the paperwork and where you sleep.

What will you actually do all day?

In the Maldives a typical resort takes up an entire island. There is one hotel, a lagoon by your room and no town to walk into. The honeymoon extras are things like a private dinner on a sandbank, a sunset dolphin cruise, a couples spa treatment over the lagoon or a floating breakfast. Our things to do in the Maldives for couples covers the ones worth booking.

Bali is the opposite. You choose between jungle and rice terraces in Ubud, restaurants and beach clubs in Seminyak, calm resort beaches in Nusa Dua and clifftop views in Uluwatu, and most couples combine two areas. See things to do in Bali for couples.

If the two of you want to switch off completely after the wedding, the Maldives fits. If you get restless after two days by a pool, choose Bali.

Which is cheaper for a honeymoon from India?

Bali is usually cheaper, for two reasons.

Food and getting around. In Bali you can eat, shop and travel outside your hotel at local prices. On a Maldives resort island there are no outside restaurants, so every meal and drink is bought from the resort. That is why we usually steer Maldives honeymooners towards full board or all-inclusive: the bill at checkout holds no surprises.

The transfer. In the Maldives you reach your resort by speedboat or seaplane, and the two are priced very differently. Two resorts with the same nightly rate can end up far apart in total cost, so always compare the room and the transfer together.

Which is better for your wedding month?

This matters more than most couples expect, because the wedding date decides the honeymoon season.

If you marry inBetter choiceWhy
December to AprilMaldivesIts driest, sunniest stretch is January to March, with December and April either side. Bali is in its rainy season until March.
May to OctoberBaliBali's dry season. The Maldives is in its wetter season from mid-May.
NovemberEither, with careBoth are between seasons. Ask us what the weather has been doing before you book.

You can still travel in the other place's wetter months. In the Maldives the rain usually comes as short showers with sun in between, and resorts are quieter and better value. Month-by-month detail is in our guides to the best time to visit the Maldives and the best time to visit Bali.

Visas and paperwork for Indians

Maldives: no visa in advance. Indian passport holders get a free tourist visa on arrival. Every traveller must submit the free IMUGA Traveller Declaration online within 96 hours before arrival. Details in our Maldives visa guide for Indians.

Bali: Indians need Indonesia's visitor visa, usually called the e-VoA. It costs IDR 500,000 per person and allows a 30-day stay. Bali also charges every foreign visitor a one-time tourist levy of IDR 150,000 per person. Details in our Bali visa guide for Indians.

Where will you stay?

In the Maldives the choice is water villa or beach villa. A water villa stands on stilts over the lagoon and is the picture most couples have in their heads. A beach villa sits on the sand, is usually larger for the money and has real shade. Many couples split the stay between the two. Our water villa vs beach villa comparison explains which suits which trip.

In Bali the choice is the area, then the villa. A private-pool villa is the upgrade worth paying for, most often in Ubud. Our guide to honeymoon resorts in Ubud lists what to check before you book one, and the Bali honeymoon resorts and villas guide covers the beach areas.

Our honest view: if you cannot decide, pick the one that suits the month of your wedding and keep the other for your first anniversary. Trying to fit both into one honeymoon means extra flights in opposite directions.
