A water villa buys privacy and the lagoon under your feet. A beach villa buys space, shade and a shorter walk to everything, usually for noticeably less. For a first Maldives trip we normally book both — five of the Maldives packages we sell deliberately split the stay, putting you on the beach first and over the water for the second half.
This is the question almost every couple asks us before they ask about price. The honest answer is that the two villa types are not competing for the same job, and once you see what each one is actually good at, the choice stops being difficult.
What is the difference between a water villa and a beach villa?
A beach villa sits on the island itself, usually with a small garden or deck, palms overhead and the sea a few steps away. A water villa — also sold as an overwater villa, an ocean villa or an overwater bungalow — stands on stilts out in the lagoon, reached by a wooden jetty, with a deck and often a ladder straight down into the water.
The practical differences matter more than the description suggests. Beach villas are generally larger for the money and have real shade, which matters more than people expect at nine degrees north. Water villas are quieter and far more private, because nobody walks past, but they are hotter in the afternoon, further from the restaurants and the spa, and on a windy day the walk back along the jetty is a wet one.
Is a water villa worth the extra money?
It depends entirely on how long you are staying. On a three-night trip, a water villa for all three nights is defensible: you came a long way for something you cannot get at home, and you will spend most of your waking time on that deck. On a five- or seven-night trip, spending the whole stay over the water usually means paying a premium for nights when you are asleep.
The other thing worth saying plainly: the villa category is not the only thing that changes the bill. The meal plan and the transfer often move the total more than the room does. An all-inclusive beach villa on a speedboat island can cost less than a half-board water villa reached by seaplane, and you will eat and drink better.
Can you stay in both on the same trip?
Yes, and this is what we book most often. Five of the Maldives packages on our packages page are split-stay by design:
- Maldives Escape — Centara Ras Fushi: two nights in a Lagoon-View Beach Villa, then an Overwater Villa. Adults-only, premium all-inclusive, 20 minutes by speedboat from Malé.
- Reethi Faru, 4N/5D all-inclusive: a Deluxe Beach Villa and a Water Villa, with complimentary seaplane transfers, in Raa Atoll.
- Siyam World, 4 nights: Beach Villa plus Overwater Villa on the WOW! premium all-inclusive plan.
- Heritance Aarah, 4N/5D: two nights beach, two nights overwater, premium all-inclusive with return seaplane transfers.
- Villa Nautica, 4N/5D: Beach Villa and Water Villa on full board with return speedboat transfers.
You move rooms once, roughly halfway through. The resort handles the luggage, and it takes about ten minutes of your holiday. In exchange you get the shaded, spacious half and the over-the-lagoon half, and you find out which one you actually prefer — which is useful information the next time.
Which resorts are all water villas, and which have neither?
A few islands make the decision for you. Adaaran Prestige Vadoo, which we sell as a couples-only romantic escape, is an intimate overwater resort — there is no beach-villa option to weigh up. At the other end, some islands we book lead with their land categories: Furaveri in Raa Atoll offers Beach Villas, Ocean Villas and Pool Villas, and Coco Bodu Hithi in North Malé Atoll runs Island Villas alongside its Water Villas and Escape Water Villas.
Most of the rest give you a straight choice. OBLU NATURE Helengeli by SENTIDO has Beach Villas, Deluxe Beach Villas and Water Villas; NOOE Maldives Kunaavashi in Vaavu Atoll has Beach Villas, Overwater Villas and Private Pool Villas; Emerald Maldives, dusitD2 Feydhoo, OBLU XPERIENCE Ailafushi, Atmosphere Kanifushi and LUX South Ari Atoll all run both. Holiday Inn Resort Kandooma adds a third option with beach, lagoon and overwater villas.
What does this actually cost?
One Maldives package on our site carries a published price at the moment: Dhigufaru Island Resort, a 5-star island in the Baa Atoll UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, at ₹2,14,273 for two people for 3 nights / 4 days, for travel between 10 September and 31 October 2026. Every other Maldives package we list is quoted on request, because the villa category, the meal plan, the transfer and the travel dates move the number so much that a single headline price would be misleading.
That is not a dodge. It is the reason to ask us rather than a booking engine: we can price the same island two or three ways — beach for five nights, split three-and-two, or all overwater — and show you the three totals side by side before you commit to any of them. How do transfers change the decision?
The resort you pick sets your transfer, and the transfer is a real part of both the cost and the day. Among the islands we book, the short speedboat hops are dusitD2 Feydhoo, OBLU XPERIENCE Ailafushi and Hard Rock Hotel Maldives at about 15 minutes, Centara Ras Fushi at 20, Coco Bodu Hithi at 40, and Adaaran Club Rannalhi and Holiday Inn Kandooma at 45. OBLU NATURE Helengeli is 50 minutes by complimentary speedboat. NOOE Kunaavashi can be reached either way — 75 minutes by speedboat or 25 by seaplane.
The seaplane islands sit further out: Atmosphere Kanifushi at about 35 minutes, Emerald Maldives at 40, Furaveri at 45. The water is generally clearer the further you go, and Baa and Raa Atolls are where the marine life is, but a seaplane adds cost and ties your arrival to daylight hours. If your flight lands late, a speedboat island is the calmer choice regardless of which villa you book.
So which should you book?
Our default recommendation, for a first Maldives trip of four nights or more, is to split: beach villa first, water villa second. You arrive tired and the beach villa is the easier room to land in; you leave from the deck you came for. If the trip is three nights, go straight to the water villa. If the budget is genuinely tight, take the beach villa and upgrade the meal plan instead — you will enjoy the week more.

Is a water villa worth the extra money in the Maldives?
For two or three nights of a longer stay, yes. For the whole trip, usually not. A water villa is the one thing you cannot get at home, and the deck steps straight into the lagoon. But the room is normally smaller than a beach villa, there is little shade, and on most islands it is the longest walk to the restaurants. Splitting the stay gives you the photograph and the comfortable nights both.
Can you stay in a beach villa and a water villa on the same trip?

Which villa is better for a honeymoon in the Maldives?
A water villa, if you only take one. It is more private, the lagoon is yours, and on the adults-only islands we book, such as Centara Ras Fushi and OBLU SELECT Lobigili, there are no children anywhere on the island. If the budget is tight, book the beach villa and spend the difference on the transfer or the meal plan instead.
Does the villa you pick change the transfer you need?
Not directly, but the resort does, and the two decisions get made together.
