The Maldives sits just north of the equator in the Indian Ocean, with a tropical monsoon climate that divides the year into two distinct seasons. Choosing the right month for your Maldives trip significantly affects your experience — visibility for diving and snorkelling, weather reliability, resort rates, and flight availability all vary considerably across the year. Here's the definitive month-by-month guide for Indian travellers.
The dry season is the Maldives at its finest — clear blue skies, calm seas, excellent underwater visibility (up to 30 metres), and consistent sunshine. This is peak season, especially December–January (Christmas/New Year) when resorts charge maximum rates and book up months in advance.
The wet season brings grey skies, rougher seas, and occasional afternoon squalls. However, "wet season" in the Maldives is relative — it rarely rains all day. The mornings are often sunny; rain is typically concentrated in afternoon/evening. Resorts charge 20–40% less and are significantly less crowded. Diving conditions vary — some dive sites are better in wet season (manta rays and whale sharks appear in larger numbers on the western atolls).
Best Value Window: May and October are the Maldives' best "shoulder months" — transitional periods with a mix of good weather and lower rates. Many experienced Maldives travellers specifically choose early May (before monsoon fully arrives) or late October (as it winds down) for the combination of reasonable prices and largely good weather.
One of the best months — monsoon ending, clear weather returning, rates still lower than peak December. Excellent diving visibility, calm seas. Book early for accommodation as December fills fast.
The most popular month for Indian honeymooners and families. Weather is perfect. Christmas and New Year see maximum resort rates (up to 3x regular rates at some properties). Book resorts and flights 6+ months ahead for December 23–January 2.
January is arguably the most reliably beautiful month in the Maldives — dry, sunny, and calm. Slightly lower rates than December. Excellent for all water sports and diving.
Clear water, calm seas, excellent visibility. February sees the manta ray season peak in many atolls. A great time to visit with fewer year-end crowds. Good availability at most resorts.
April is one of the quietest months in the Maldives' dry season — weather remains mostly good (some afternoon clouds but still largely sunny) and resort prices are significantly lower than December–March. Good availability. Consider this for a value-season luxury Maldives trip.
The southwest monsoon begins. Early May is often still pleasant; late May can bring increased rain and rougher seas. Rates drop 20–30%. Whale shark season begins in the South Ari Atoll (May–November) — the most reliable location in the world to snorkel with whale sharks.
The deepest wet season. Morning sunshine is common but afternoon rain is frequent. Seas can be rougher, particularly in June. Diving visibility lower (15–20 m versus 30 m in dry season). However: 30–50% lower resort rates, far fewer tourists, lush green vegetation, and the extraordinary Baa Atoll manta ray aggregation (biosphere reserve) peaks June–November. Expert divers often prefer the wet season for this reason.
September is typically the rainiest month. By October, weather improves steadily — sea conditions calm, visibility increases. Late October is transitional and often very good. Rates begin rising in November as peak season approaches.
