Where to stay in Ubud
Ubud is not one place. Which side of it you pick changes the honeymoon more than the star rating does.

Private-pool villas: what to actually check
A private pool is the one upgrade in Ubud that is worth the money — but the phrase is used loosely. Before we quote a villa we check four things, and you should too:
- Is the pool actually private? Some "private pool" villas are overlooked by the neighbouring unit or a walkway. Ask for a photograph taken from inside the pool, not the brochure shot.
- Is the view the one in the pictures? Valley-view and garden-view rooms at the same property can differ by a factor of two in feel. The category name matters more than the property name.
- How far is the shuttle? Gorge-side villas are 10 to 20 minutes from town. Most run a free shuttle, but check the last one back before you plan a long dinner.
- What is included? Breakfast almost always; airport transfer often not. In Ubud a one-way private transfer is a real cost, not a rounding error.
What to do from Ubud
- Campuhan Ridge Walk — go at sunrise, before the heat and the crowds. Free, and about an hour there and back.
- Tegallalang rice terraces — early morning for the light and for having the swings to yourselves.
- Mount Batur sunrise trek — a 2am start and a genuinely steep climb. Worth it if you are both reasonably fit; skip it if a 2am alarm on your honeymoon sounds wrong.
- Ayung river rafting — gentle grade two, ends in the gorge below the Sayan villas.
- Tirta Empul — the water temple. Go with a sarong and go early.
- A couples spa afternoon — the single most underrated Ubud honeymoon day. Bamboo pavilions, river sound, half the price of the equivalent at home.
When to go
Ubud sits higher and greener than the coast, which means it is cooler, wetter and more prone to afternoon cloud. The dry season, roughly April to October, is the reliable window. July and August are busiest and priciest. April, May, September and early October give you close to the same weather at noticeably lower villa rates — and in Ubud the rate difference between peak and shoulder is larger than it is on the beach.
Beach or Ubud — or both
Couples ask us to settle this constantly. The honest answer is that they solve different problems. Ubud is for privacy, greenery and slowness. The coast is for sunsets, dinners and swimming in the sea. A five-night trip splits comfortably as three beach nights and two in Ubud; seven nights lets you do four and three and add Nusa Penida. Doing only Ubud is a defensible choice for couples who genuinely do not care about beaches — and doing only the beach is the one we most often talk people out of.

Is Ubud good for a honeymoon?
Ubud is the part of Bali most couples remember. It is inland, green and quiet — rice terraces, river gorges and jungle rather than beach and nightlife. If you want privacy, a private-pool villa and slow mornings, Ubud is the strongest choice on the island. If you want beach clubs and sunsets, pair it with a coastal area instead of choosing between them.
How many nights should we spend in Ubud?
Two to three nights is the sweet spot inside a five to seven night Bali honeymoon. Two nights lets you settle into the villa and do one big excursion. Three lets you add a sunrise trip or a spa day without feeling rushed. More than four and most couples start wanting the sea.
Which area of Ubud is best for a honeymoon?
The Sayan and Payangan side, above the Ayung river gorge, has the dramatic jungle-valley views and the most private villas — but you are a 10 to 20 minute drive from Ubud town. Central Ubud puts you in walking distance of restaurants and the market but is busier and noisier. Tegallalang sits north among the rice terraces, quiet and green, with fewer dining options.
Do Ubud honeymoon villas really have private pools?
Many do, and it is the single upgrade most worth paying for. A private-pool villa means your own plunge or lap pool, not a shared resort pool — which is what makes the photographs, and the privacy, work. Check whether the pool is genuinely private or overlooked before booking; we do this for every property we quote.
How far is Ubud from the airport?
