6 Things to Do in the Maldives for Couples

By Curate Your Vacation · Updated September 2026

The six things we would send a couple to do in the Maldives are: snorkel the house reef, go looking for whale sharks or mantas, book one overwater spa treatment, eat one dinner somewhere genuinely private, watch the sunset from the western side of the island, and spend one whole day doing absolutely nothing. All six are available at resorts we actually book, and four of them cost nothing extra.

Most “things to do in the Maldives” lists read like a city guide, which is the wrong shape for a country where you will be on one island for your entire stay. You cannot island-hop casually. What you can do is choose the right island, and then do a small number of things properly. That is what this page is about.

1. Snorkel the house reef

This is the single best thing in the Maldives, it is free, and an astonishing number of couples never do it. The house reef is the coral shelf around your own island; on a good one you walk in from the beach and are over living reef within a minute.

Islands differ enormously here, which is why it is worth choosing for it. OBLU NATURE Helengeli by SENTIDO, in North Malé Atoll, sits on one of the Maldives' most vibrant house reefs and is a genuine snorkelling and diving island — the marine life is a few steps from the beach. Holiday Inn Resort Kandooma in South Malé Atoll is known for its diving and surfing, and Coco Bodu Hithi and Furaveri are both surrounded by vibrant coral reefs. If snorkelling matters to you, tell us before we shortlist islands, because it is the one thing you cannot fix after you arrive.

2. Go and find the big animals

The Maldives is one of the few places where seeing a whale shark is a realistic plan rather than a lottery ticket — but only from the right atoll.

LUX South Ari Atoll, which we book, is renowned for year-round whale shark encounters, because South Ari Atoll is where they stay all year. For manta rays, the place is Baa Atoll: Dhigufaru Island Resort sits inside the Baa Atoll UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, which is the protected area the Maldives is best known for. Most resorts run guided snorkelling and excursion trips; on the all-inclusive plans we sell, several of these are included rather than charged as extras — Emerald Maldives and Siyam World both bundle complimentary excursions into their plans.

3. Book exactly one overwater spa treatment

An overwater treatment room with a glass panel in the floor is a very Maldivian indulgence, and one session is usually the right number. Centara Ras Fushi, an adults-only island 20 minutes by speedboat from Malé, has a relaxing overwater spa; Holiday Inn Kandooma and Furaveri both run full wellness facilities, and Furaveri has an entire wellness village.

Book it for the middle of the trip rather than the first day. You will have found your rhythm by then, and it is the natural pause between the active half and the lazy half.

4. Eat one dinner somewhere genuinely private

Every resort will sell you a private dinner, and on an island of a few hundred metres it is actually private rather than a table in a corner. This is the one splurge we consistently recommend.

Adaaran Prestige Vadoo is built for it — an intimate overwater resort designed for couples, with candlelit dinners under the stars as the point of the place rather than an add-on. OBLU SELECT Lobigili, adults-only in North Malé Atoll, goes further with underwater dining. If you are on an all-inclusive plan, ask what the private dinner costs on top before you arrive; it varies a lot, and it is easier to decide at home.

5. Watch the sunset properly, from the right side of the island

Sunset in the Maldives is a nightly event and it is free, but which side of the island your villa is on decides whether you see it from your own deck or walk for it. Ask when you book.

Adaaran Select Hudhuranfushi is known for its sunset moments — and, unusually, for world-class surfing, so it suits a couple where one of you wants the beach and the other wants something to do. Sun Siyam Olhuveli is another island built around its sunsets and overwater villas. A sunset fishing or dolphin cruise is the standard excursion, and on several of the all-inclusive plans we book it is already included.

6. Do nothing, deliberately, for one entire day

This sounds like filler and it is the advice couples thank us for most. The common mistake is to treat a four-night Maldives stay like a city break and book something every day, then fly home tired.

Pick one day with nothing in it. It is also the day to use whatever your plan includes and you have been ignoring — the non-motorised water sports, the kayaks, the snorkel gear. If “doing nothing” is not quite your speed, Siyam World is the counter-example worth knowing about: it has a floating water park, daily entertainment and complimentary water sports on its WOW! premium all-inclusive plan, which suits couples who get restless by day three.

How long do you need, and what does it cost?

Four nights is the sweet spot for a couple: two active days, one spa-and-dinner day, one empty day. Three nights works if you are pairing the Maldives with somewhere else; seven nights is lovely but is a different budget.

On price, we publish what we can: Dhigufaru Island Resort is currently listed at ₹2,14,273 for two for 3 nights / 4 days, for travel between 10 September and 31 October 2026. The rest of our Maldives packages are quoted on request, because the island, the villa type, the meal plan, the transfer and your dates each move the total substantially. Our Maldives honeymoon guide breaks down where the money actually goes, and if the Maldives is looking out of reach, the budget guide covers the local-island alternative.

What we would not bother with

Two honest ones. First, a Malé city tour: unless you have a long layover, the capital is not what you came for and the time is better spent on the island. Second, booking excursions before you arrive at a resort whose plan already includes them — several of the all-inclusive packages we sell bundle snorkelling trips, water sports and excursions, and couples routinely pay twice because nobody read the inclusions. Ask us what is already in your plan; it is a two-minute conversation that regularly saves real money.

Deciding between villa types while you are at it? Our water villa vs beach villa comparison covers which to book, and when to book both.

Tell us what you actually want to do

Snorkelling, quiet, whale sharks or a floating water park — the answer changes which island we put you on, and it is much cheaper to get right before booking than after. We are a real agency with offices in Bangalore (9945534012) and Coimbatore (9994042247). Browse our Maldives packages or send us your dates.

Frequently asked questions

What is the most romantic thing to do in the Maldives as a couple?

A private dinner on the sand or the deck, on an island small enough that it genuinely is private. Adaaran Prestige Vadoo, which we sell as a couples-only overwater escape, is built around exactly this, and OBLU SELECT Lobigili — adults-only, in North Malé Atoll — offers underwater dining. Neither needs planning beyond telling the resort the night you want it.

Do you need to be able to swim to enjoy the Maldives?

No, but it changes what the trip is. The best free thing in the Maldives is the house reef, and a resort like OBLU NATURE Helengeli by SENTIDO, which sits on one of the country's most vibrant house reefs, rewards anyone willing to put a mask on. If neither of you is confident in water, say so when you enquire — we will steer you to an island with a shallow, sheltered lagoon rather than a reef that drops away.

Which Maldives resorts are adults-only?

Of the islands we book, Centara Ras Fushi in North Malé Atoll and OBLU SELECT Lobigili are adults-only, and Adaaran Prestige Vadoo is an intimate overwater resort designed for couples. If the point of the trip is quiet, these are where we start.

Can you see whale sharks and manta rays in the Maldives?

Yes, and where you stay decides your odds. LUX South Ari Atoll, which we book, is known for year-round whale shark encounters, because South Ari is where they are resident. Dhigufaru sits inside the Baa Atoll UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, the part of the Maldives best known for manta rays. Neither is a guarantee — they are wild animals — but staying in the right atoll is most of the work.
