Venice is one of the world's truly unique cities — 118 islands connected by 400 bridges, no roads, no cars, just canals, gondolas, and centuries of art and architecture. For Indian travellers, Venice makes an unforgettable addition to any Italian or European itinerary.
Getting to Venice
Fly to Venice Marco Polo Airport (VCE) from major European hubs. From India, the easiest connections are through Dubai, Istanbul, or Frankfurt. Alternatively, arrive by high-speed train from Rome (3.5 hrs, €25–60) or Milan (2.5 hrs, €15–50). Book Italian trains on Trenitalia or Italo websites.
Getting Around Venice
Venice has no cars or taxis — navigation is by water or foot. Options:
- Vaporetto (water bus) — the city's public transport; 75-minute ticket €9.50 or 24hr pass €25
- Gondola — romantic but pricey; officially €90 for 30 min during the day (€130 after 7 pm). Best shared among 6 passengers to split the cost
- Water taxi — fast, expensive (€60–80 from airport to San Marco)
- Walking — Venice is small enough to walk most places; getting lost is half the fun
Top Sights in Venice
St. Mark's Square & Basilica
The heart of Venice. The Byzantine Basilica di San Marco is free (no shorts or bare shoulders); climb the campanile (bell tower) for panoramic views (€8). The square floods regularly at high tide (acqua alta) — Wellington boots are sold everywhere.
Doge's Palace
The Gothic palace of Venice's rulers for 1,000 years. The gilded council chambers, Bridge of Sighs (prison bridge), and dungeons make this a 2-hour must-see. Buy tickets online (€25) to avoid 1-hour queues.
Rialto Bridge & Market
The most famous of Venice's 400+ bridges. The Rialto Market nearby has been selling fish and vegetables since 1097 — arrive before 9 am to see it at its most vibrant.
Island Day Trips
- Murano — 10-min vaporetto; famous for glassblowing workshops (watch for free)
- Burano — 45-min vaporetto; a candy-coloured island famous for lacework and the most Instagrammable streets in Italy
- Torcello — Venice's oldest settlement; Byzantine mosaics in near-total solitude
Where to Eat
Avoid restaurants on St. Mark's Square — they charge 3–4× for ambience. Instead, eat at bacari (Venetian wine bars) for cicchetti (small plates, €1.50–3 each) — the local equivalent of tapas. Campo Santa Margherita in Dorsoduro has the best local restaurants. Best cicchetti trail: start at All'Arco near Rialto, then Cantina Do Mori, then Bar Al Nembro.
