Switzerland Travel Guide: Snow, Lakes & Mountain Trains

By Curate Your Vacation · 10 min read · Updated May 2025

Switzerland is the ultimate European dream for Indian travellers — snow-capped Alps, chocolate-box villages, pristine lakes, and the world's most efficient train network. Yes, it is expensive, but with the right planning you can experience Switzerland without breaking the bank.

Schengen Visa for Switzerland

Switzerland is a Schengen member. Apply at the Swiss Embassy via VFS Global. Process takes 10–15 working days. Required: 3-month bank statement, travel insurance (€30,000+ cover), hotel bookings, and employment documents. Fee: €80 + VFS charges.

Top Destinations in Switzerland

Interlaken — The Adventure Capital

Nestled between Lake Thun and Lake Brienz with a jaw-dropping backdrop of the Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau, Interlaken is the base for most Swiss adventures. Paragliding (CHF 180), skydiving, river rafting, and canyoning are all available. The town is compact and walkable — spend 2–3 nights here.

Jungfraujoch — "Top of Europe"

At 3,454m, the Jungfraujoch station is the highest railway station in Europe. The train journey from Interlaken through Grindelwald and Kleine Scheidegg is itself spectacular. Ticket: approx. CHF 215 return from Interlaken (book online for a 10% saving). The Sphinx Observatory, Aletsch Glacier view, and Snow Fun Park justify every franc.

Zurich

Switzerland's financial capital and most cosmopolitan city. The Old Town (Altstadt), Lake Zurich promenade, Kunsthaus art museum, and Bahnhofstrasse shopping street are the highlights. Day trip to Rheinfall (Europe's largest waterfall, just 45 min by train) is excellent.

Lucerne

Arguably Switzerland's most photogenic city. The Chapel Bridge (Kapellbrücke) dating to 1333, Lion Monument, and Old Town are all within a 20-minute walk. Take the cogwheel railway to Mount Pilatus or gondola to Mount Rigi for Alpine panoramas at a fraction of Jungfraujoch's cost.

Zermatt & the Matterhorn

No cars allowed in Zermatt — take the train from Visp. The iconic pyramid-shaped Matterhorn dominates the skyline. Take the Gornergrat railway for the best Matterhorn views. Ski in winter; hike in summer.

Getting Around: Swiss Travel Pass

The Swiss Travel Pass gives unlimited travel on trains, buses, and boats throughout Switzerland, plus free entry to 500+ museums. Cost: CHF 232 for 3 days, CHF 329 for 8 days. For a typical 7-day India to Switzerland trip, the 8-day pass pays for itself with 2–3 intercity train journeys plus the Lucerne funicular and museum entries.
