Bali vs Thailand: Which Should Indians Visit First?

By Curate Your Vacation · 7 min read · Updated May 2025

The eternal question for first-time international travellers from India: Bali or Thailand? Both are in Southeast Asia, both offer incredible beaches, delicious food, and a wildly affordable cost of living. But they are very different destinations with distinct personalities. Here is the definitive comparison.

Quick Verdict

Cost Comparison

CategoryBaliThailand
Street food meal₹150–250₹80–150
Mid-range restaurant (2 pax)₹700–1,500₹500–1,000
Private pool villa per night₹5,000–15,000₹4,000–12,000
Budget guesthouse per night₹1,500–3,000₹800–2,000
Private driver per day₹2,500–4,000₹1,500–2,500 (Grab/songthaew)
Spa/massage (1 hour)₹700–1,500₹400–800
Beer (bottle)₹250–400₹150–300
Overall daily spend (per person)₹3,000–6,000₹2,000–4,500

Winner: Thailand is 20–30% cheaper overall. Bali private pool villas offer extraordinary value for couples, however.

Beaches

Bali: Kuta (lively, surfing), Seminyak (upscale, beach clubs), Canggu (hipster, Instagram), Uluwatu (dramatic clifftop). None have the classic turquoise-lagoon perfection — waves are stronger and the water is less clear than Thailand's islands.

Thailand: Maya Bay (Phi Phi Islands) rivals any beach on earth. Railay Beach, Koh Lanta, and Koh Kradan in southern Thailand have crystal-clear, calm turquoise water. Winner: Thailand for beach quality and variety.

Food

Thailand wins on food decisively — it has one of the world's great cuisines: nuanced, complex, varied by region, and available at world-class quality from street carts. Bangkok is a genuine food city. Bali food is good but lighter — nasi goreng, mie goreng, satay — and it lacks the depth of Thai cuisine. Vegetarians may prefer Bali for the ubiquity of tofu and tempeh dishes.

Culture & Sightseeing

Bali wins on culture — the Balinese Hindu culture (the only Hindu island in predominantly Muslim Indonesia) gives Bali a unique, spiritual atmosphere. Temple ceremonies, offerings, dance performances, and the general sense of sacred space are unlike anywhere else in Southeast Asia. Thailand has magnificent temples (Wat Phra Kaew in Bangkok is spectacular) but cultural experiences are more tourist-oriented.

Nightlife

Thailand wins heavily. Bangkok's Sukhumvit bar scene and rooftop bars, Phuket's Bangla Road, Koh Samui's beach party culture, and Full Moon Party at Koh Phangan make Thailand the party capital of Southeast Asia. Bali has good beach clubs (Potato Head, Finns, Ku De Ta) but nothing matching Bangkok or Phuket for nightlife scale.

What Do Most Indian Travellers Say?

Having sent thousands of Indian clients to both destinations, our verdict is: Thailand for your first SE Asia trip (more variety, better beaches, lower cost, easier navigation). Bali for your second trip (deeper cultural experience, more romance, better villas). Most travellers who visit Bali first find Thailand slightly disappointing by comparison culturally — but those who do Thailand first find Bali's spiritual atmosphere a revelation.

🔥 The Best Plan: If you have 12–14 days, consider splitting — 5 nights in Bangkok + Chiang Mai, then fly to Bali for 6 nights. Several low-cost airlines (Air Asia, Batik Air) fly Bangkok–Bali direct. See both in one trip and end the debate forever.
