UK Standard Visitor Visa: What Indians Need to Know
Britain's Standard Visitor Visa allows Indian passport holders to visit the UK for tourism, family visits, business meetings, or short courses. Post-Brexit, the UK is no longer part of Schengen — it has its own separate visa regime. The visa is issued for up to 6 months and, if approved as a 10-year multiple-entry visa (for strong applicants with good travel history), offers excellent flexibility for regular UK visitors. The application is entirely online and submitted along with a biometric appointment at a UKVI (VFS Global UK) centre in India.
UK Visa Requirements for Indians
- Valid Indian passport (at least 6 months beyond planned return date)
- Completed online application form (from gov.uk/standard-visitor-visa)
- Biometric enrolment at UKVI/VFS centre in India
- Photographs (as per UK specifications)
- Bank statements (last 6 months — show sufficient funds: minimum ₹3–4 lakh recommended, more for longer trips)
- Income Tax Returns (last 2–3 years)
- Employer letter (with designation, salary, approved leave, confirmation of return)
- Property/asset documents (if applicable — strengthen ties to India)
- Travel insurance (not mandatory but strongly recommended and noted positively)
- Accommodation bookings in UK
- Return/onward flight bookings
- Travel history (visa photocopies)
Financial Clarity Tip: UK visa officers look for consistent, explainable bank balances — not necessarily huge sums, but funds that clearly cover your trip without financial strain. A sudden large transfer the week before applying is a red flag. Show 6 months of natural, consistent account activity with a comfortable balance relative to your trip cost.
UK Visa Application Process
- Apply online at gov.uk/standard-visitor-visa. Create a UK Visas & Immigration account.
- Complete the application form (30–60 minutes). Answer all questions carefully — truthfully and consistently.
- Pay the visa fee: £115 (approximately ₹12,500) for a Standard Visitor Visa (up to 6 months). A 2-year multiple entry visa costs £400 (₹43,500); 5-year costs £670 (₹72,700); 10-year costs £963 (₹1,04,500).
- Book a biometrics appointment at a UKVI-approved VFS Global centre (Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Kolkata, and other cities).
- Attend your biometric appointment with original documents.
- Wait for decision: standard processing is 3 weeks; priority processing (extra ₹15,000) is 5 business days.
- Passport returned by courier with visa sticker if approved.
Common Reasons for UK Visa Rejection
- Insufficient or inconsistent financial evidence
- Vague travel purpose or poorly written covering letter
- Weak ties to India (no stable employment, no property, no family)
- Previous visa overstay or refusal (must be declared)
- Applying for too long a stay relative to funds and employment situation
- Discrepancy between application form and supporting documents
UK Visitor Visa: Do's and Don'ts
Do:
- Apply 3–4 weeks before travel (priority) or 6–8 weeks ahead (standard)
- Write a comprehensive covering letter explaining the purpose, itinerary, and your ties to India
- Use the same account for your primary financial evidence — don't move money across accounts just before applying
- Include details of your UK itinerary (hotels, planned attractions, who you're meeting)
Don't:
- Submit the application without a return flight booking
- Exaggerate income or assets — UKVI can verify
- Apply for a 6-month visa if you're only going for 2 weeks — it can raise questions about intent
- Submit documents in a language other than English without certified translation
UK Trip Budget for Indians
