Prague: Europe's Fairy-Tale Capital

Prague is one of Europe's most beautiful cities — and one of its best value. The Czech capital escaped the bombing of World War II almost entirely, leaving its medieval Gothic, Baroque, and Art Nouveau architecture intact in a way that Paris, London, and Berlin cannot match. The skyline of church spires and castle towers reflected in the Vltava River at dawn is one of Europe's great visual experiences. Better yet, Prague is significantly cheaper than Western European capitals: a pint of the world's best beer costs ₹200, a hearty Czech lunch ₹600, and excellent 4-star hotels run ₹6,000–₹9,000 per night.

Schengen Visa & Getting There

Czech Republic is Schengen. Apply at VFS Global for Czech Republic with standard Schengen documents. Visa fee: ₹7,500. Prague Airport (PRG) is served from India via connections through Frankfurt (Lufthansa), Amsterdam (KLM), or Istanbul (Turkish Airlines). Return fares from India: ₹40,000–₹70,000. Flight time from Mumbai: approximately 9–11 hours with one stop.

Pro Tip: Prague's Old Town is extremely walkable — the Castle District (Hradcany), Lesser Town (Mala Strana), Old Town (Stare Mesto), and New Town (Nove Mesto) are all connected by Charles Bridge and can be covered on foot in 3–4 days. A Prague Card (₹4,000) gives free entry to 50+ attractions.

Top 5 Experiences in Prague

1. Prague Castle Complex

The world's largest ancient castle complex (70,000 m²) sits on a hill above the Vltava River — a walled complex containing the magnificent Gothic St. Vitus Cathedral (with extraordinary stained glass windows by Alphonse Mucha), the Old Royal Palace, St. George's Basilica, and Golden Lane's tiny artisan cottages. Franz Kafka briefly lived at No. 22 Golden Lane. The castle district also contains three palaces, gardens, and extraordinary city panoramas.

2. Charles Bridge at Sunrise

The 14th-century Gothic bridge connecting Old Town and Lesser Town is lined with 30 Baroque statues of saints — and ordinarily packed with tourists, street musicians, and portrait painters. Visit at sunrise (5:30–7 AM) for an almost empty crossing with golden light reflecting off the Vltava and the castle rising behind. The John of Nepomuk statue is considered lucky — touch the bronze plaque and make a wish.

3. Old Town Square & Astronomical Clock

The heart of Prague is one of Europe's most beautiful public squares — surrounded by Gothic and Baroque church towers, the extraordinary Týn Cathedral, and the Art Nouveau Obecni Dum (Municipal House). The 600-year-old Astronomical Clock (Orloj) performs a mechanical procession of the Apostles every hour on the hour from 9 AM–11 PM. At midnight on New Year's Eve, the square holds one of Europe's great celebrations.

4. Josefov: The Jewish Quarter

Prague's former Jewish ghetto contains some of Europe's oldest and best-preserved Jewish heritage: six surviving synagogues (including the Gothic Old-New Synagogue, Europe's oldest active synagogue, built 1270), the haunting Old Jewish Cemetery with layers of tombstones stacked several deep, and the Jewish Museum documenting the extraordinary history of Prague's Jewish community. Entry to the combined Jewish Museum: ₹2,200.

5. Bohemian Switzerland & Day Trips

Just 2 hours from Prague, the Bohemian Switzerland National Park contains dramatic sandstone canyons and the Pravcicka Brana — the largest natural sandstone arch in Europe. Cesky Krumlov (UNESCO-listed medieval town, 3 hours by bus) is Prague's best day trip — a preserved Renaissance castle, meander of the Vltava, and charming old town.

Best Time to Visit Prague

May–June and September–October are ideal — warm, clear skies, and manageable crowds. July–August is peak tourist season (extremely crowded). December is magical — Prague's Christmas markets are among Europe's best, with mulled wine and trdelnik pastries. January–February is quiet and cold but hotel rates are very low.
