The Complete Pre-Departure Checklist for Indian Travellers
The week before an international trip should be exciting — not stressful. Most travel problems are preventable with systematic preparation. This checklist covers everything from documents to digital, health to home, so you can board your flight with complete confidence.
Documents (The Non-Negotiables)
- Passport: Valid for at least 6 months beyond your return date. At least 2 blank pages. Check NOW — not the night before.
- Visa: Applied for and received (allow 3–4 weeks minimum for most countries). Print a copy; save digitally.
- Flight tickets: Print or save to phone. Know your flight times, terminal numbers, and baggage allowance.
- Hotel/accommodation confirmations: Print or save offline. Include address, phone number, and check-in instructions.
- Travel insurance certificate: Including the 24/7 emergency helpline number. Keep it accessible, not buried in email.
- Forex card + forex card PIN: Test the PIN before departure at an Indian ATM. Load currencies 3–5 days before travel.
- Emergency contact list: Indian Embassy in your destination, travel insurance helpline, your hotel, your home emergency contact.
- International driving permit (IDP): If renting a car abroad — get this from your Regional Transport Office at least 1 week before travel.
The Digital Safety Copy: Email yourself a PDF containing scans of: passport bio page, visa, insurance certificate, credit/debit card numbers (without CVV — so you can call to block them if stolen), and your emergency contact list. Access from any computer in the world if your phone and bag are stolen simultaneously.
Money & Cards
- Forex prepaid card loaded with destination currency (BookMyForex, HDFC, ICICI)
- Zero-markup credit card (Niyo, IDFC FIRST, Axis Atlas) as backup
- USD 200–300 equivalent in cash for first 2 days (ATM backup)
- Inform your Indian bank of travel dates to prevent overseas card blocks (HDFC/ICICI can be notified via mobile banking app)
- Memorise (or write on paper separately from card) your card PINs
Technology & Electronics
- Universal power adapter: Europe (type C/E/F), UK (type G), USA (type A/B), Australia (type I) — carry a multi-region adapter
- International SIM or eSIM: Airalo or Google Fi eSIMs offer international data plans from ₹1,500–₹3,000 for 2 weeks in most regions — far cheaper than roaming charges from Indian carriers
- Portable charger/power bank: 20,000 mAh at minimum for long travel days
- Offline maps: Download Google Maps for your destination for offline use before you land (Wi-Fi-dependent downloads don't work at the airport)
- Offline translations: Download Google Translate language packs for offline use
- Important apps downloaded: Grab/Uber, Booking.com, Google Maps, Google Translate, your bank's app, your airline's app
Health & Medications
- Prescription medications: Carry original prescription + 50% extra supply (in case of extension or loss). Keep in hand luggage, not checked bags.
- Basic medical kit: Paracetamol (Crocin), antidiarrhoeals (Imodium), antihistamine (Cetirizine), antiseptic cream, bandages, ORS sachets
- Altitude medication: If travelling above 3,000 m (Nepal, Swiss Alps, Bhutan), carry Diamox (acetazolamide) — only on doctor's prescription
- Vaccinations: Yellow fever certificate for Africa travel; Hepatitis A and Typhoid recommended for all international travel. Check destination-specific requirements 6 weeks before travel.
- Travel doctor consultation: Book 6 weeks before travel for vaccines that require time to become effective
